He wanted to kill 40: A man from Kigali Rwanda beheaded 4 people claiming to be bewitched

The Rwandan police have identified Hafashimana Usto known as Yussuf, who is suspected of involvement in the killing of various people in Kigali by beheading them.

During the two months starting from December 2022, Hafashimana was arrested after killing four people, including two by beheading. The preliminary investigation revealed that 34-year-old Hafashimana, who was beheading people was the way he used to break into people’s houses to steal.

This man from Ngororero District, joined the City of Kigali in 2008 and started robbery in 2012. He was imprisoned for two years for theft (2015-2017).

He was arrested after the killing of four people and two others were injured in different areas of Kigali, where two brutally killed and beheaded. The brutal murder committed between December 27, 2022 and January 30, 2023.

In the investigation carried out by the security forces, it was arrested Hafashimana Usto alias Yussuf who is suspected of involvement in the death of Nshimiyimana Léonce.

It turned out that the suspect was in love with the deceased. On February 3, 2023, Hafashimana Usto was arrested with three phones of three people who had been killed for a few days including Nshimiyimana Léonce, Gafaranga Vedaste and Niyonsenga Gedeon.

Nshimiyimana Léonce, who was 33 years old, his body was found on January 30, 2023, in Kigarama village,  Cell of Nyagahinga, Rusororo Sector in Gasabo. His body showed that he was tortured and beheaded.

On January 18, 2023, Niyonsenga Gideon, who was a security guard, was found in Kanyinya village, Nyagahinga district, Rusororo sector in Gasabo district.

The man who killed 4 people planning to kill 40

On January 15, 2023, 32-year-old Gafaranga Vedaste, who was a security guard, his dead body was found in Marembo village, Nyarukombe cell, Muyumbu sector in Rwamagana district.

On December 30, 2022, two goalkeepers Hagenimana Vedaste, 22 years old, and Nzababagareza Filmin, 27 years old, guarding a resident’s home in Kicukiro, were seriously injured in Kamashashi village, Kibaya district, sector of Nyarugunga.

On December 27, 2022, a street child named Matayo was killed in Uwateke village, Rwampala village in Kigarama sector in Kicukiro district. They were found to have been killed in the head.

The people Hafashimana who is suspected of killing all have been killed with a machete. He admitted that he was the one who tried to kill two security guards in Nyarugunga sector but they were taken to Kanombe Hospital.

He said that the way he used to steal was to surprise the sleeping guards and kill them to see how he stole. He said that the last person he killed was Nshimiyimana Léonce who had been released from Nyarugenge Prison for a few days.

He said that he cut off his head while they were hiding in the bush, waiting to break into a resident’s house to steal in Rusororo sector. He said that after cutting off his head, he immediately threw it in a pool of water.

He admitted that he was the one who killed a street child known as Matthew, cut off his head and threw it in the open air. He pleaded that he was poisoned to kill when he was shown to the media this Sunday, February 5, 2023,

Hafashimana said that killing was poisoned, because when he went to do it, he did not think it was a crime. He said, “When I got to the administration, I realized that it was a crime. I ask God for forgiveness, leaders and all Rwandans. I had no other plans.”

He said that he started killing three months ago, because of his roommate named Nshimiyimana Leonce who wanted to hand him over to the police. In his plan, he felt that he would kill 40 people.

He said, “I felt in my brain that I would kill 40 people.” When asked how he found out he was crazy and untreated, he said he was once taken to church and they told him. He said, “The painters told me [that I was crazy] because the woman I married was praying there.

I have a wife and a child.” Hafashimana said he was only killing people who were sleeping and guarding. He said, “I cut my heads and threw myself into the big water, that’s how my madness ordered me, but when I got to the administration, it disappeared.” Hagenama Vedaste who was killed by Hafashimana and was taken to the doctor, said that he and his partner were surprised while they were sleeping at night, where they were guarding the building in the city of Kigali.

He said, “We were sleeping in the house, and we saw someone come and come in and cut us at midnight, but we couldn’t find out who he was.”

He went on to say, “He cut my head, face to nose, the face was dead, and his arm cut me. We didn’t die because we don’t know that person.”

Hagenimana said that this killing had a serious impact on him because “it is a serious disability. Now I’m like a weak person, I don’t care, I’m always eating a lot.”

Birinda Rashid, who lives in Rusororo sector, where he killed a security guard, he says it happened at night around 9:00 am. He said, “The child was sleeping on the porch near the window.

“I immediately woke up and came to the salon when I heard the lower part of the body shaking because the head was cut so that the brain was visible, and I quickly opened it quickly.”

Birinda said that he immediately called for help but it was in vain because he had been severely cut. He said that the criminal entered the closet using the method of climbing because they saw blood where he passed.

Rwanda Police Spokesperson, CP John Bosco Kabera said

Hafashimana was arrested after linking information and evidence. He said, “It is information that we receive through the investigation we receive from people, to connect the evidence, what is said it seemed that he had a plan to kill many others, but a quick investigation was conducted so that we think that the others he planned to kill were not possible.” After the arrest,

Hafashimana is going to be handed over to the police for a thorough investigation. So far, Hafashimana has been arrested for this crime of brutal murder, however the Police say that there are others who were involved in the robbery.

The police announced that Hafashimana admitted to his involvement in the deaths and went to show where the bodies were dumped. The head of the child Hafashimana killed in Rwampala was not found, and it is believed that it was washed away by the water in the Nyabarongo river.

Hafashimana, who was born in Ngororero District, dropped out of school when he was in the third year of primary school.
